The Goonies: A Nostalgic Masterpiece in LEGO Form

The Goonies, released in 1985, is more than just a movie—it’s a rite of passage for children such as myself who were born in the late 70’s and early 80’s, and grew up with some cult classic movies such as this one. Directed by Richard Donner and brought to life from a story by Steven Spielberg, the film follows a group of misfit kids on a daring adventure involving hidden treasure, dangerous traps, and unforgettable characters, most notably Sloth and the formidable Mama Fratelli, and let’s not forget Data and Chunk!.

Now, nearly 40 years later, LEGO is bringing the magic back with a highly anticipated LEGO Ideas set rumored to contain 2,912 pieces and a retail price of $299.99 / £289.99.

Part of LEGO’s Bigger 80’s Revival Lineup

If you’re a fan of LEGO’s 80s throwbacks, you’ve already seen the LEGO Ghostbusters Ecto-1, the DeLorean Time Machine, Voltron, and even Optimus Prime hit shelves. The Goonies fits perfectly into this revival wave, joining other rumored contenders from LEGO’s If We Could Turn Back Time Ideas challenge—including E.T., Gremlins, Big, Beetlejuice, and Honey I Shrunk the Kids – just to name a few of the classic 80’s sets we’re likely to come across in the near future.

From LEGO Dimensions to Full LEGO Ideas Glory

Many people, even LEGO fans, don’t actually realise that this isn’t the first time we’ve seen Goonies’ in the LEGO form. The Goonies’ LEGO journey actually began earlier than you probably think in 2017 with LEGO Dimensions, featuring a Sloth minifigure, a micro version of One-Eyed Willy’s ship and a micro version if the bone organ. Since then, fans have submitted over a dozen LEGO Ideas designs trying to bring a full set to life.

Lego Dimensions Goonies

Two standout early concepts were:

  • Goonies 360 – highlighting key scenes but missing the iconic pirate ship.

Then came the “If I Could Turn Back Time” challenge. Several designs for Goonies inspired LEGO sets were submitted, but there were 4 standout ones of note from FarmFarm, the second from TangTaizong, the third from Brickstability and the last from Delusion Brick. The winning concept designed by Delusion Brick, finally hit the mark—capturing both the story and spirit of the film.

A Story-Driven Set Design

The proposed layout of Set 21363 is as clever as it is nostalgic. It walks builders through the film’s key moments in diorama style:

  • Starts at the Fratelli’s hideout
  • Moves into the underground tunnels
  • Includes traps like the bone organ, wishing well, and waterfall cave
  • Ends with the legendary Inferno pirate ship

Each section flows into the next, making the build itself feel like a journey through the movie. We even see a nod to the missing octopus scene, deleted from the original movie and eluded to by Chunk in the final beach scene of the movie – which confused many people who weren’t aware of this deleted scene.

One-Eyed Willy’s Ship – The Grand Finale

While the Ideas model of the Inferno is impressive, it’s not without its critiques. The hull and rigging feel slightly off, with some fans saying it looks more like Noah’s Ark than a movie-accurate pirate ship. That said, the way the ship is embedded in the rocky cave layout is inspired.

Hopefully, the final LEGO version refines the ship design, improves the sails and rigging, and—fingers crossed—includes One-Eyed Willy himself in a treasure-room side build or GWP (Gift With Purchase).

What Might Change Before Release?

Historically, LEGO refines fan-submitted Ideas models before production. Some remain nearly identical (e.g., Pixar’s Luxo Jr., Ghostbusters Firehouse), while others (like Caterham Seven or Sonic Green Hill Zone) go through heavy redesigns.

Expect improvements in stability, part usage, and perhaps even changes to the ship’s size and minifig count.

Minifigures Galore

The set is expected to include 11 minifigures:

  • The Goonies Crew: Mikey, Chunk, Mouth, Data, Brand, Andy, and Stef
  • The Fratellis: Jake, Francis, and Mama Fratelli
  • Sloth in his Superman shirt

One-Eyed Willy hasn’t been confirmed—yet!. Whilst it’s unlikely we’ll see this, I’m personally remaining positively optimistic.

Why This Set Matters

This isn’t just another retro cash grab. The Goonies LEGO set is a love letter to a simpler time, when stories were about friendship, curiosity, and courage. It connects generations, allowing parents who grew up with the movie to share it with their kids—brick by brick.
